This application note describes a method for determining the lithium content in battery material and waste using METTLER TOLEDO's UV/VIS spectrophotometer. Download our application package to get the PDF of the application note and ready-to-use method files.

Why Is It Necessary to Determine Lithium Content in Battery Waste?

It is necessary to determine the lithium content in battery waste as it can help accurately detect and quantify the principal constituents and trace impurities in the cathode material. This, in turn, can affect the performance and cost of the lithium-ion battery.

How Can Lithium Content Be Determined Spectrophotometrically?

The most reliable method for determining lithium content in cathode material, lithium ore, and battery wastewater is through spectrophotometric analysis using Thorin indicator as the complexing agent in a potassium hydroxide solution of water and acetone. The absorbance of the complex formed is measured at 480 nm for quantification of lithium.
